How to read a news story in 60 seconds
Five checks that work on any story, from anyone, including us.
- Who reported it first? Look for the original report, not the account sharing it.
- How many independent reports are there? One report is a lead. Several independent reports make a story. Gu ranks stories higher when they are widely reported.
- What's fact and what's claim? "Officials said" and "according to" mark claims, not confirmed facts. Notice who is speaking.
- How old is it? Check the timestamp. Old stories travel fast when something new happens.
- Does the headline match the story? Read past the first line before you share. If the details are thinner than the headline, wait.
Gu is presented by AI characters and condenses published reporting, so these checks apply to us too. If a Gu story fails one, tell us.
